Test Results

ACC verifies that health tests of Cotons submitted to ACC have been done and lists them here.  Conscientious breeders have a variety of tests done on their breeding Cotons and may request health information back from their puppy buyers as the dogs mature.  If you contact a breeder about purchasing a puppy, ask them about health testing.

The ACC testing form is available at Forms and is completed and signed by a veterinarian.

The CTCA test is another comprehensive testing form to be completed by the veterinarian, and includes as well the results of a blood panel, including thyroid levels.  This form can be found at the web site http://members.aol.com/cotonnews/healthtestforms.

For European breeders, the health testing was done in Europe by qualified specialists.

Eye examinations in the U.S. and Canada should be done by a Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist every year.  These examinations are certified by the Canine Eye Research Foundation (CERF) if the breeder sends in the completed test form, and the results are listed here and at Coton Eye Health DATA from the Canine Eye Research Foundation for all Cotons.  A complete listing of Cotons who have been certified free of eye disease in 2001,2002 and 2003 to date can be found at Coton Eye Health.  This test should be done every year.

Orthopedic examinations, including checks for hip, knee, elbow and patella problems can be done by qualified veterinarians.  There are also official testing bodies, including OFA, GDC, Penn-hip and others who will certify the results of tests.  Checking for hip dysplasia requires an x-ray under anesthesia, and not all breeders have this done because anesthesia is always a risky procedure, and because hip dysplasia is not considered to be a problem in small dogs.  The different testing organizations question each others' testing protocol and the meaning of the tests. A complete listing of dogs certified by OFA can be found on the web site www.offa.org.  OFA will not certify a dog for hip dysplasia under the age of two years although a preliminary test can be done at one year.
