Questions to ask breeders; how to find your ideal puppy

ACC breeders have requested an ACC breeders’ list, and some would feel more comfortable with an ACC Code of Ethics for breeders. We are here to serve those interested in Coton de Tulear, not only breeders but also owners and potential puppy buyers.

We believe it would be useful for potential puppy buyers to have access to a breeders’ list maintained by ACC, and that on it should be designations for "puppies available" and "puppies expected on date …". This helps interested parties searching the web to learn of breeders in their area and to make contacts.

We have a novel  notion of what a COE is. It is not a contract between breeder and club, where for example, a breeder agrees to mention the club in advertising. These requirements have nothing to do with ethical breeding.  A COE is a contract between a breeder and a buyer and a pledge by the breeder to future generations of Cotons.

ACC breeders have reviewed and contributed to the ACC Code of Ethics Guidelines and agree they meet or exceed this standard.  It behooves those interested in purchasing a puppy to ask further questions of breeders to find out their personal ethics and philosophy of breeding and placing Coton Dog puppies.
ACC breeders are quite willing to answer at length any questions you might have and to discuss all aspects of their breeding program, their health testing and characteristics of the breed in general and their dogs in particular.

Although many breeders have a strong internal code of ethics, the only way for you, the puppy buyer, to know for sure is to ask questions of the breeders.  We have developed a list of questions designed to elicit useful information.  Reputable and ethical breeders should be glad to answer all your questions and should have good answers to them.  Ultimately, the task of keeping high standards among Coton breeders as a whole rests with you, the buyer.  Don't purchase a Coton from a breeder with whom you feel uncomfortable.  The ACC does not certify breeders.  The ACC breeders' list is not a paid advertisement for breeders, but neither is it an endorsement.  You are looking for a family member for the next 15 or more years.  Take your time and choose wisely.  Good puppies are worth waiting for.

We provide a copy of the ACC Code of Ethics Guidelines as well as an ACC Breeder's list with puppies available and a List of Questions to Ask Breeders to help you find a reputable and conscientious breeder.  Please let us know if you are dissatisfied in any way with your encounter.  ACC is here to help
and to serve.
